The Australian Drug Prices Authority (ADPA) is reviewing prices for a number of drugs, which include Viagra (sildenafil), Cialis (tadalafil), and Levitra (vardenafil), for sale in Melbourne.
ADPA Commissioner Dr Peter Heneghan said that the government is also reviewing prices for the erectile dysfunction drug Avanafil, which is used in Australia for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
“The government’s concern over the price of erectile dysfunction drugs such as Cialis and Levitra, and avanafil is that the costs of these drugs will be high,” Dr Heneghan said.
“Many people will be embarrassed about buying drugs for erectile dysfunction, which can be dangerous to their health, so the government is advising anyone with erectile dysfunction to consult their doctor.”
The ANZ has issued a warning to the public that “the price of Cialis and Levitra will be high for consumers who take these drugs regularly.”
Cialis (tadalafil) is a brand of the drug that is used to treat erectile dysfunction. The brand of Cialis is the first oral medication to treat erectile dysfunction.
“The prices of erectile dysfunction drugs have been rising across the world, including in Australia,” Dr Heneghan said.
“It is important to note that erectile dysfunction drugs are not regulated by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) as they are not suitable for everyone.”
“Viagra and Cialis are used to treat erectile dysfunction and can interact with other drugs, so it is crucial to have a consultation with a doctor before taking any of these drugs,” he said.
“We are reviewing prices and seeking additional information as it relates to the sale of erectile dysfunction drugs.”
The ANZ is also looking into alternative treatments for the conditions, including erectile dysfunction drugs such as Avanafil, Levitra, and Cialis. Avanafil is available as a prescription medication for erectile dysfunction.
“There is no evidence that these drugs are safe for consumers or patients to take,” the company added.
The price of Avanafil in Australia was estimated at $10.95 for a supply of 30 tablets, according to the ANZ.
“A typical price for a single tablet of Avanafil in Australia is $1.50, so in this case, the price is approximately $1,972,” Dr Heneghan said.
